Haven Along the Mississippi
Bans on gender-affirming care for trans youth have dominated state legislatures across the country including in Iowa. According to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 30.9% of transgender youth live in a state where their right to lifesaving care has been stripped away.
Gender Affirming Care in the United States
Despite peer-reviewed and expert recommendations from the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Psychological Association all confirming the importance of gender affirming care, the states in red have passed legislation and imposed restrictions that ban hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and other routine forms of gender affirming care that have been proven to save lives. The states in pink and orange are expected to follow suit over the course of the next two years, leaving the children in the center of this country surrounded by states that will deny their rights to this basic care.
Located in the Illinois-Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, The Project of the Quad Cities (TPQC) is uniquely positioned to become a haven in an otherwise dangerous region of the country for trans and gender-diverse (TGD) youth. By providing access to gender affirming care, TPQC will become a place that serves not only the local Quad Cities community, but also beyond our region including all of Iowa and some parts of Western Illinois, ensuring our TGD youth have the kind of care they need to live the kind of lives they deserve.
The Project Can Be a Haven
TPQC is ready to provide gender affirming care to TGD youth. We have partnerships in place with local physicians to help administer care, and now require the funding to support the first three years of clinical operations.
That’s why we need your help. Please consider making a donation today.
